How to Make AI Feel Native in Your Workflow

Most engineers already have access. The adoption gap is: availability → instinct. Here are a few concrete moves that push AI from “a thing I try” into “the default way I work.”

1) Turn it into a reflex (triggers)

Any new repo / unfamiliar code: start with “explain the architecture + find entry points.”
Any ambiguous task: “turn this into a plan + list unknowns.”
Any error / log: “summarize and propose next experiments.”
Any PR: “review for correctness, readability, risk, and test gaps.”

2) Put it where you already are (surfaces)

IDE: fast iteration, refactors, local context.
CLI agent: multi-step work, repo-wide changes, scripted workflows.
Chat (Teams): summarizing threads, drafting messages, decision capture.
Mobile: capture thoughts + delegate actions on the move.

3) Promote artifacts (so you can reuse)

thoughts.md: keep a living design doc of decisions and rationale.

4) Use the usage dashboard… but focus on outcomes

Tokens are a leading indicator, not the goal.
Pick one “before/after” story per week: time-to-first-PR, time-to-clarity, time-to-unblock.
Share the workflow, not the magic: what you typed, what you accepted, what you rejected.

A good share-out topic is not “AI is cool.” It is: “Here’s how I made it boring.”

Boring means repeatable: the same triggers, the same surfaces, the same artifacts, and a visible improvement in your weekly throughput.
